Atlantic Union Members Respond to Earthquake in Haiti

The Atlantic Union Conference shares deep concern for the state of affairs in Haiti due to the massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit the region on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Our prayers go out to the millions of Haitians who have been affected by the earthquake and to our Seventh-day Adventist brothers and sisters.

Our hearts are filled with sorrow on the plight of our Haitian brothers and sisters following the earthquake disaster on January 12. Our Union and Conference administrators met and have agreed to declare this Sabbath, January 16, 2010 as a special Union-wide Day of Prayer for the people of Haiti.

Also, we have decided to designate Sabbath, February 6, 2010 as the Sabbath to collect a Special Offering for relief efforts in Haiti. You will receive more information on the special offering as the date approaches.

Please announce these notices in your churches AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and let’s continue to lift our hearts in prayer for the country of Haiti.

Sincerely yours … and HIS,
Donald G. King

Message from the Atlantic Union Conference vice president for African and Haitian Ministries

As you are aware, on Tuesday, January 12, a major earthquake of a 7.0 magnitude shook Port-au-Prince, the capital city of Haiti. Scores of homes have collapsed, tens of thousands are dead and thousands are unaccounted for. This is reported to be the most powerful earthquake to hit Haiti in more than 200 years. The situation is chaotic and thousands have been left homeless. As of this time we received the sad news that one Seventh-day Adventist pastor lost his life as the U.N. building collapsed on his car. The epicenter of the quake was located close to our college in Diquini, in a Seventh-day Adventist community.

The Atlantic Union Conference family is deeply saddened about the situation in Haiti and wishes to express their sympathy and support to the families and friends who have lost loved ones in this disaster or been affected in anyway.

We solicit your prayers for the leaders of the country and people of Haiti as well as the leaders and members of our churches. As you may imagine, the needs are enormous, so we request your financial support in alleviating the suffering of the people.
